Schizophrenia

What is it?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder which affects thinking, emotions and behaviour.

How common is it?

It is the most common form of severe mental illness and affects 1 person in every 100.

What age range does it affect?

It is rare before puberty, and is most likely to start between the ages of 15 and 35 years.

Other general Information

Schizophrenia is NOT:

  • A ‘split personality’, nor a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ condition in which a person suddenly becomes a ruthless killer as in Hollywood thrillers
  • A label pinned on anyone whose dark deeds society cannot understand. Serious violence is rare in schizophrenia and the majority of those who commit violent crimes are not schizophrenic
  • An escape into a fantasy world away from the pressures and expectations of society

Symptoms

  • Visual hallucinations as well as auditory hallucinations
  • Severe paranoia
  • Complex delusions often involving the person’s desires
  • Feelings of emotional numbness
  • Difficulty in communication with others
  • Inability to cope with everyday tasks (eg. dressing, washing)

Regular Causes

  • Genetics – The condition tends to run in families
  • Brain damage at or before birth
  • Stressful life events (e.g. loss of a loved one, homelessness)
  • Physical or sexual abuse
