Aims of this project
This website was originally created by two young women for their Queen's Guide Community Action project, which was to inform and educate about mental health disorders and conditions which may encountered within Guiding.
Although the original project came to an end 2 years ago in 2004, this website is an ongoing project, and has been expanded to also help people not involved with Guiding. Many, many people will be affected by mental health problems, whether in childhood, adulthood, or through the experiences of a friend, relation or colleage. Keeping ourselves well-informed about the issues is the only way to combat the prejudice and fear that unfortunately is still often associated with mental health problems.
The project developed from a realisation of the lack of information on mental health issues within GirlguidingUK training, despite evidence that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem. Within Guiding there is a responsibility to help and support the emotional development of the girls and young women in our care. Other adults, whether or not they are volunteers in Guiding, also deserve understanding and freedom from stigma or discrimination.
Think about the numbers: in a group of thirty girls under 15, seven or eight will be affected by mental health issues; in a District with perhaps twenty Guiders that means statistically that five will be affected. Mental health problems can affect anyone.
We hope that by taking the time to browse this site you will be able to better understand the conditions and difficulties that people with mental health problems may face, particularly discrimination and stigma. We also hope that the next time you encounter someone with a mental health problem you will be equipped to respond positively.
We have used several resources from the campaign, especially the ten signs of mental health problems, in order to better organise some of the sections to make them more accessible.
If you would like to request a printed copy of the information contained in this website, please contact us. There will be a small charge in order to cover printing, binding and postage costs.
